Allstar Goldi barrelled onto the scene late in the $8,800 conditioned trot feature and got up to win a three-across finish at The Raceway at the Western Fair District on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
The mare was among a line of three vying for the lead into the first turn, but Samuel Fillion tucked her in third while So Not Cool (Damian MacLellan) rolled forward for the front. That gelding led through the quarter in :29 and half in 1:00 before favourite Prince Of Sussex (Austin Sorrie) ranged up beside him on the turn for the backstretch.
As they went head-to-head through three-quarters in 1:29.4, Fillion found Allstar Goldi a way out of the shuffle to fifth, swinging her wide around The Great Reset (Lorne House) coming off the final turn. She picked past horses on the grandstand side, out-sprinting The Great Reset and tracking down Prince Of Sussex to win by a neck in 2:01.1. The Great Reset nosed out Prince Of Sussex for second.
Allstar Goldi improved to eight-for-34 on the season for trainer Steve Watson of Guelph, Ont., who co-owns the mare with Allstar Farms of Millbank, Ont. The five-year-old daughter of Muscle Up The Goal-Stuck On Deagan won for the 17th time in 79 career starts and brought her bankroll up to $121,728. Her win price was $8.10.
Also, on the night, driver Daryl Thiessen teamed four winners including the highest-priced victor during the 11-dash program. Thiessen’s winners would include the ‘grit grinder’ State Of Play winning his fourth straight over London for leading trainer Lindsey Kerr - who would double up on the program with Land Of Paradise; veteran trotter Esquire would pick up his 49th victory - career win number 1,498 for trainer Mark Winacott; Faithfuls Nola would get there for owner/trainer Ernest Nussio and then the big longshot Muscle Up The Gold would strike at 37/1 for trainer Joe Shaw.
Austin Sorrie drove for the triple aboard Bella, Land Of Paradise and Ididitmyshui - while driver Garrett Rooney would win the last two races on the night with Global News and Docsphillycheese.
